LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As Louisville Baseball heads to Omaha, Nebraska for the College World Series, senior infielder Tanner Shiver hopes for a doubleheader, but not in the way some may think.
Shiver is marrying his fiancée, Katelyn Farmer, June 20 in Jeffersontown. They picked out the date when they were students at Tennessee Tech in 2023.
If all goes well and the Cardinals advance, the first game of the CWS Finals is the next day, June 21.
“The plan as of right now is to win on our side of the bracket on either the 18th or 19th — hopefully the 18th — fly back to Louisville, Kentucky, get married, and when the reception ends, get on a plane and get back to Omaha, Nebraska, before midnight and then wake up and play the next day,” Shiver said.
While Shiver’s wedding day is on an off day, he has to reschedule their honeymoon as the CWS Finals start June 21. Louisville head coach Dan McDonnell said the national championship will forever be part of their story should the Cardinals advance.
“I don't want to mess up your honeymoon, but vacations and those places aren't going anywhere," McDonnell said. "I mean, to fly back, get married, fly back, play a national championship. What a story you're going to have to tell for the rest of your life."
Shiver said it's not how they imagined the week of their wedding, but the family is full of die-hard Cardinal fans, and he’s thankful for his fiancée’s support.
“They're huge Louisville fans," Shiver said. " ... They're very excited ... Katelyn been the biggest blessing from God that I can ever ask for. She supported me in everything that I've ever done."
Shiver said he loves the draw for Omaha and how his team has been performing.
“I love our side of the bracket," he said. "I like how we stack up. I like how we've been pitching and hitting lately and just trying to encourage the guys to go out there and just have belief in yourself and know that it's going to happen because I think we got a real chance with that."
Shiver said it will be a long 24 hours but is destined to make it happen.
“We're going to win a national championship, and I'm going to get married in the same weekend," he said. "It's going to be awesome."
This is the sixth time UofL has advanced to the CWS; their last appearance was in 2019. Louisville will face Oregon State Friday, June 13 at 7 p.m. eastern.
