NICOSIA – After dismissing complaints from rival parties about an alleged cover-up in the case of a black spy van in 2019, Cypriot authorities confiscated it as a spyware and phonetap scandal in Greece renewed attention about surveillance.
There was nothing of value in it, reported Philenews, citing sources not named about the van that was owned by an Israeli ex-intelligence officer whose company now owns the Predator spyware said used in Greece.
Opposition politicians said that showed a Cypriot connection over the bugging of PASOK Socialist leader Nikos Androulakis’ phone in Greece and an attempt to install spyware on it, the company having been on Cyprus before.
The businessman, Tal Dilian, is CEO of Intellexa, which sells the spyware and moved offices from Cyprus to Athens after the discovery of the spy van on the island which he boasted could take over cell phones.
Cyprus’ Deputy Attorney-General Savvas Angelides said that dropping charges against an Israeli ex-intelligence officer believed operating a spy van in 2019 was not part of a cover-up.
Opposition politicians said the government tried to hide the dangers from the spy van in not charging three defendants, including Dilian but Angelides said that there was no link to the case in Greece, The Cyprus Mail reported.
