Israel's national rescue service Mada says a gunman killed five people and wounded three others in a shooting near a synagogue Friday night in east Jerusalem in one of the deadliest attacks on Israelis in years. The gunman was shot and reportedly killed.

The killings took place a day after Israeli troops killed nine Palestinians in the deadliest West Bank raid in years.

Chemical weapons watchdog blames Syrian air force for Douma attack

The global chemical weapons watchdog on Friday said a nearly two-year investigation had found that at least one Syrian military helicopter had dropped gas cylinders on to residential buildings in the rebel-held Syrian city of Douma in 2018, killing 43 people.

The April 7, 2018, attack on the outskirts of Damascus was part of a major military offensive that returned the area to the control of forces under Syrian President Bashar al-Assad after a prolonged Russian-backed siege against the rebel stronghold.

A previous investigation by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) had already concluded in March 2019 that a chemical attack had taken place in Douma, but that inquiry had not been mandated to assign blame.

The Investigation and Identification Team was established by member states at the Hague-based OPCW in November 2018 to identify perpetrators of chemical attacks in Syria after Russia vetoed the joint U.N.-OPCW mission.

Syria denies using chemical weapons but a previous joint inquiry of the United Nations and the OPCW found that the Syrian government used the nerve agent sarin in an April 2017 attack and has repeatedly used chlorine as a weapon. It blamed Islamic State militants for mustard gas use.

French, Dutch ministers visit NATO battlegroup in Romania

The foreign ministers of France and the Netherlands paid an official visit on Friday to a military base in Romania where both nations station troops as a part of a NATO battlegroup that was bolstered in the wake of Russia's invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.

Hoekstra told troops from the multinational battlegroup stationed there that they demonstrate “precisely what our alliance stands for,” and said they play a key role in “keeping this continent and our territory safe.”

“Russia is waging war in a way we haven't seen in decades, and therefore we cannot let our guard down — we need to step up our efforts,” Hoekstra said, adding: “There is only one way forward: Ukraine must win this war, for its own sake but also for ours.”

Indian sugar mills to close early as weather dents cane supply

Sugar mills in India's top producing state Maharashtra are set to stop cane crushing 45 to 60 days earlier than last year as adverse weather has curtailed sugar cane availability, a senior state government official told Reuters on Friday.

The western state of Maharashtra, which accounts for more than a third of the country's sugar output, could produce 12.8 million tonnes of sugar in the 2022/23 marketing year that began on Oct. 1, down from an earlier forecast of 13.8 million tonnes, Maharashtra's sugar commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad said.

Lower sugar output could prevent the world's second-biggest exporter from allowing additional exports, potentially supporting global prices and allowing rivals Brazil and Thailand to increase their shipments.

Congress seeks discussion on China in Budget session of Parliament

The Congress on Friday took serious note of a research paper presented at the DGP-IGP annual conference, alleging that it has exposed the government's "weak-kneed approach" towards China and demanded a discussion on the issue in the Budget session of Parliament.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to spell out if he is still "afraid" of China or still "loves" the country.

Addressing a press conference, he said PM Modi's clean chit to China has been shredded into pieces by a Police Meet security paper, alleging that the Modi government's "continued denial" of Chinese illegal occupation and construction of infrastructure has emboldened China and compromised India's national security.

"The DGP-IGPs conference exposes the Modi government's 'weak-kneed approach towards China," he alleged, noting that the recent three-day conference attended by PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval "ironically exposed Modi government's absolute apathy" to what was happening in eastern Ladakh at the LAC with China.

Ally of former Pakistani PM Imran Khan jailed ahead of trial

A Pakistani court on Friday sent to jail for two weeks a senior ally of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, after his arrest over allegations that he threatened the chief of the elections oversight body and other government officials.

Khan was ousted by a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April, but has refused to accept that outcome and has persisted in his calls for early elections, leading to a political standoff with the current government of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Khan's supporter Fawad Chaudhry was arrested from the eastern city of Lahore on Wednesday following a complaint from the Election Commission of Pakistan, which has accused him of threatening its head, Sikandar Sultan Raja, and other officials.

The government says Chaudhry's threats were meant to prevent the commission's officials from performing their duties and inciting people to violence against them, a charge Chaudhry's lawyer Babar Awan denied.

In an article and cover story which will appear in the upcoming issue of the RSS' Panchjanya magazine, it accused the BBC of repeating an attempt to impose lies and propaganda after the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Significantly, BBC has been caught up in controversies for making the documentary which has been rejected by the Ministry of External Affairs, for "allegedly being a symbol of colonial mindset, propaganda piece, prejudiced and lack of objectivity", the RSS said.

India market regulator increases scrutiny of Adani group

India’s market regulator has increased scrutiny of deals undertaken by the Adani Group over the past year and will study a report issued this week by short-seller Hindenburg Research to add to its own ongoing preliminary investigation into the group’s foreign portfolio investors, according to two sources aware of the matter.

On Wednesday, the U.S. short-seller said it held short positions in the Indian conglomerate, accusing it of improper use of offshore tax havens and flagging concerns about high debt, leading to a massive sell-off of India-listed shares of the conglomerate's companies.

Adani rout crosses $50 billion as stocks plunge

The selloff in Gautam Adani’s corporate empire accelerated on Friday, erasing more than $50 billion of market value in less than two sessions as Asia’s richest man struggles to contain the fallout from a scathing report by US short seller Hindenburg Research.

The rout is piling pressure on the Indian tycoon as it erodes his net worth and threatens to sour investor sentiment toward the $2.5 billion share sale by his flagship firm Adani Enterprises Ltd. Losses accelerated even after the Adani Group disputed Hindenburg’s allegations in a Thursday call with bondholders and pledged to release a detailed rebuttal on Friday.

Adani Enterprises lost more than 19% on Friday, sliding below the 3,276 rupees level at which anchor investors were allotted shares in the follow-on equity sale. Some like Adani Green Energy Ltd. and Adani Total Gas tumbled plunged by the daily 20% limit, adding to a $12 billion selloff in group companies on Wednesday. Volumes in these stocks were at least triple their three-month average.

The selloff hit sentiment in the broader Indian market as trading resumed after Thursday’s holiday. The benchmark NSE Nifty 50 Index lost more than 1.5%, the worst performance in Asia, with bank stocks among those leading losses as investors fretted over their exposure to Adani group.

Australian Open: Tsitsi makes it to his first AO final

Stefanos Tsitsipas had a harder time strictly following all of the rules than he did outplaying his opponent in the early going, then recovered after blowing two match points late in the third set, and eventually reached the final at the Australian Open for the first time by beating Karen Khachanov 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3 on Friday.

The No. 3-seeded Tsitsipas had been 0-3 in semifinals at Melbourne Park, but he finally went a step further to get to the second Grand Slam championship match of his career.

It looked easy for the better part of three sets against Khachanov, but Tsitsipas got broken when serving for the match at 5-4 in the third, then failed to convert either chance to end it when he went up 6-4 in the ensuing tiebreaker. Khachanov collected four consecutive points there, erasing the match points with a pair of booming forehands. Tsitsipas, though, regained his footing quickly, grabbing a 3-0 lead in the fourth.

“If you stick around, if you dedicate yourself even more and if you concentrate on these important moments,” Tsitsipas said, “it pays off quite well.”

Now Tsitsipas will face Novak Djokovic or unseeded American Tommy Paul in the men's singles final on Sunday.

French President Emmanuel Macron met with Iraq Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on Thursday, said the French presidency, signing a set of strategic agreements meant to boost Iraq's economic co-operation with Paris, especially in the energy and publics transportation sectors.

France and Iraq signed a treaty seeking to strengthen bilateral relations in anti-corruption, security, renewable energy and culture, the Elysee Palace said in a statement issued in the early hours of Friday.
