John Crist is a great comedian, but this is one of the most hilarious jokes he’s ever told.
If you’re not familiar with John, you should be. I’m a big fan of the Nashville-based comedian. He’s done a lot in the country music world, and even has some great videos making fun of the culture here in Music City.
Spot on.
But his latest take has me questioning whether John even listens to country music.
Of course Morgan Wallen recently dropped his behemoth 37-song album I’m The Problem. I haven’t even listened to it all the way through yet because it basically takes five business days to get through, but from what I’ve heard there are some hits and more than a few misses…which is pretty much what you’d expect from 37 songs.
John Crist, though, is apparently a BIG Morgan Wallen fan.
The comedian spoke about the new album on the most recent episode of his podcast Net Positive with John Crist, and recalled a discussion that he had with his girlfriend Lydia about the project – and his girlfriend rightfully called him out for his ridiculous take:
“I go, ‘Morgan Wallen is the only artist that you would go to his show and leave and go, oh he didn’t play…’ Because I think he has too many hits. So you go, ‘Oh he didn’t play 98 Braves, or he didn’t play all the songs. And now we have a bunch of new ones.’
She goes, ‘That’s just a ridiculous statement.'”
But Crist doubled down on his hot take – and somehow made it worse:
“I go, ‘I’m saying, if you go to Alan Jackson, which I’ve been to, they’ve played all of them.’ Played all the ones you like. Any other artist, if you go to Reba McEntire, if you go to Jason Aldean, they play the ones. They play all the ones that you like.”
Whoa. Alan Jackson? I mean, my favorite song of AJ’s is “Dallas” and he doesn’t play that one often. Sure, you hear most of the popular hits, but AJ has so many #1 songs that he doesn’t even have time to play all of those in his live shows. And not to mention George Strait, who has 60 #1 hits…and doesn’t play all of them at every show.
Hell, I went to a Garth Brooks concert a few years ago and he didn’t play “Beaches of Cheyenne,” and that was one of his biggest hits.
That’s also not to mention all of the hardcore fans who go to a show hoping to hear a song that’s a fan-favorite but may not have been a massive hit. Eric Church fans go to his show hoping to hear their favorite song like “Knives of New Orleans” or “Lightning” or any number of songs that he just isn’t able to play every night.
Even the example that John gave for Morgan of “98 Braves” wasn’t a single or a commercial hit. Sure, it may be a fan-favorite, but every fan is going to have their favorites for ANY artist and go to a show hoping to hear a song that probably doesn’t make the setlist.
John, I love you buddy, but you need to listen to Lydia on this one.
